The most important routes of foreign trade transports
Road network

Road transports of foreign trade goods are concentrated on the highway network in the Southern Finland. Export transports of the industry sector are located on the network connecting the production sites to ports.
The transit transports to Russia mainly use the highway 7 / E18 to Vaalimaa border crossing point and the highway 6 leading to the Nuijamaa border crossing point.

Railway network

Export transports from forest and metal industry factories to the ports are concentrated on the core railway network. Raw materials from Russia are mainly imported via the railway network of southeastern and eastern Finland.
Transit transportation from Russia is carried out almost entirely by railway to the ports of Kokkola and HaminaKotka.

The depth requirements for sea waterways have been determined primarily by crude oil and other raw material transports.

Today fairways to some of the biggest ports (Mussalo in HaminaKotka, Sköldvik, Naantali, Tahkoluoto in Pori) allow passage of all ships that can pass Danish straits.
